Note:
We have labeled this as a Variant Rose Bowl. We know that this mold and
pattern was designed and sold as a rose bowl. This piece of Dugan glass
has been previously called a spittoon in an earlier publication. We
feel that author made an incorrect assessment based its variant shape.
If you review general line antique brass and glass spittoons you will
find that whey are much larger and have a lip that is conical outward
and they were designed for single use. The opening on the bowl is the
same as any other honeycomb rose bowl. This is a Variant Rose Bowl the
shape and size precludes general use as a spittoon. The glass treatment
would make it very difficult to clean, the physical size is simple too
small to be practical, unless you hired a 6 year old as a swampier, you
would never be able to clean the insides.
Color of Bowl: Green
Glass Type:
Transparent Green glass with an application of frit in vertical bands
running from the bottom to the top of the rose bowl, around the entire
rose bowl. Frit was oxidized to create a silver iridescence
color.
Bowl:
Honeycomb patterned,
round globe shaped bowl with a collar base (marie). No crimps on rim.
The upper ¼ of the rose bowl has been pressed into the bowl while hot to
produce a concave shape. Bowl also has a collar base (marie) flat
bottom to slight concave where pontil rod was attached. Bowl has a
slight convex interior, in the collar base area.
Bowl exhibits internal optic, vertical bands under the silver oxidized
frit. Vertical bands are not external.
Decoration:
None except for frit treatment to exterior of the rose bowl. The frit
was oxidized which resulted in either a silver or gold iridescence
color. In the case of this rose bowl, silver. The frit was not
completely warmed in, giving and external texture to frit bands.

3.0” height
by 4.37” wide. Bowl opening 1.5”.
